GREEN HOTEL

Eco Hotel Tuscany

Environmental Management System in accordance with UNI ISO 13009:2018

The Sense Experience Resort is an authentic Eco Hotel in Tuscany because it blends perfectly into the surroundings, lessening its impact through the application of good practices.

A series of actions have been established in the resort centred on the use of a short supply chain of primary ingredients, compostable products, with a focus on recycling, and the adoption of cost-saving systems.

All practices that help to lend shape to an authentic philosophy and make The Sense Experience Resort a genuine green hotel in the heart of Tuscany, capable of meeting the high standards of environmental and social sustainability.

A reference point for anyone who wants to travel the world whilst being mindful of the environmental impact that this entails.

Eco Hotel and sustainable tourism by the sea in Tuscany

The Sense Experience Resort believes in the Tuscan Maremma coast and the creation of an environmentally and socially sustainable system.

We believe that everyone plays a fundamental part in pursuing this goal. Which is why we want to make our commitment clear.

Cala Violina

A commitment that was undertaken from the very first phase of the Hotel’s design. And implemented through very specific choices:

  • Environmental restoration of waterfront dune systems with pioneer species. Only native plant species and local ecotypes were planted.
  • Garden system: The external areas of The Sense complex are set in a wonderful landscape setting.
  • A windbreak was recreated with the existing plants to protect the inland areas from the sea winds and the pounding action of the sands. All the plants planted in the Sense gardens (more than 7000 shrubs and perennials of 80 different species) were chosen for their characteristics of resistance to brackish winds, for their low water requirement. Summing up a revolution in the concept of the garden and, therefore, the relationship with the environment, with the plants already present on the site.
  • The presence of Mediterranean scrubland species such as windswept Mastic trees, phillyrea, junipers and holm oaks showcase the design priority of the green areas.
  • The lawns are created with ground cover species with low water needs where the experience comes from the sight of the multicoloured flowers and the soft feeling underfoot.

The gardens are new but are still fascinating to explore. They are still a work in progress but already capable of producing a myriad of eye-catching colourful flowers and leaves with their waxy outer cuticles, insulating velvety skins, leaves of all shapes and taproots to survive the heatwave, whilst producing scents and flavours to be experienced.

A commitment pursued with practical steps:

  • Water osmosis: Production of drinking water from salt water. The overall figure is about 19,000 m3 per year, i.e. 19,000,000 litres which allows us to meet over 90% of our water requirements. Daily capacity of 160 m3.
  • The water is not taken from the sea, rather the salt water is drawn through an intake (surface well) from the area above the water table and fresh water is introduced by irrigation. Photovoltaic panels which covers the system’s electrical consumption. The water is produced on-site with low energy consumption.
  • Water recovery: recovery of rainwater and swimming pool wastewater for irrigation use.
  • Water-saving systems.
  • No use of fossil fuels.
  • Remote control of technical systems.

Eco Hotel, our procedures in the hotel

We have thought of very specific plans regarding the catering and conference sectors:

  • Use of a short supply chain of primary ingredients by purchasing local products.
  • Use of compostable tableware and cutlery for composting food waste from the kitchen and other F&B departments.
  • More than 70 % of our waste is sorted and disposed of by type, about 63,000 kg annually.

But we also focus on what happens in the rooms:

  • We use water sparingly to avoid waste. Leave the towels to be changed inside the shower and those to be reused hanging on the towel rails or shelves.
  • We pour dirty water down the drains to simplify purification through the waste network.
  • We avoid pouring unauthorised substances into sinks, showers and toilets, even in small quantities.
  • Recycling is also a good habit to follow while on holiday, so we ask our guests to dispose of their waste in special containers, differentiating by type of material.
  • Smoking is strictly forbidden inside the hotel.
  • We always keep devices that generate sound or noise turned down and turn them off during siesta time and at night.
  • We use environmentally friendly cleaning products whenever possible.

Likewise, we offer activities in line with a philosophy geared towards protecting the environment. For example, we use bikes and public transport. A smart way to avoid traffic, parking problems and pollution. Bicycles are also available at the hotel for short trips.

Green Hotel in Tuscany including trails and experiences

Environmental protection is part of The Sense’s own history, which has strong ties to the surrounding countryside. A setting that allows us to explain who we are. A narrative that runs through the pine forest, the Mediterranean scrubland, dune vegetation, native shoreline species, and gardens where shrubs and perennials create dialogues with nature, creating truly stunning settings.

A relationship with the environment that is also defined through the design of authentic sensory pathways in pursuit of beauty, balance, the relationship with nature, and a breathing space.

THE ETRUSCAN COAST

Historical notes on the settlements and iron smelting activities on the island of Elba by the Etruscan people.

Experience: walking in The Sense Park, you can discover how small dark stones can be found in the sand, on the dune and seafront, that are the remains of iron castings by the Etruscan people that the sea and winds have brought here from the nearby island of Elba.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PLACES

Experience: we suggest botanical trails on which to discover the Mediterranean scrubland and the endemic species found in the park, with ethnobotanical fact sheets about some native plant species in the park(2), plant species in the gardens and flowering lawns(3) and places of experience(1)

THE PLACES OF EXPERIENCE (1)

SUNSET TRAIL

The trail we suggest accesses the two seafront lookouts. Unique locations, featuring stunning viewpoints with the sensation of being surrounded by nature on all sides. Overlooking the sea and the scent of the Mediterranean maquis all around. You walk up a narrow path and reach a place where you can engage your senses and feel nature: the sound of the sea, the warmth of the sun, the vision of a sunset, a gentle breeze, and the sight of the starlit sky.

You can stop to sunbath in private, take time to read, meditate, work out, or have an intimate dinner on the seafront decks.

Surrounded by the roots of large pines, suspended over the Mediterranean scrubland, where biodiversity is tangible and the air is filled with intense fragrances, lines of windswept mastic trees, and the salt-laden breeze carrying the scent of helichrysum.

DAWN TRAIL

It is a more private and solitary trail, as you make your through the holm oaks up to a platform overlooking the sea. A blue sea merging with the sky.

A large pine tree and the sound of nature, a unique place in which to rest and contemplate in The Sense Park.

KITCHEN GARDEN

The kitchen garden is a place designed to be used both by the kitchen and in horticultural therapy for guests of the Sense.

A vegetable garden open to anyone who wants to experience horticultural therapy.

The herbs, seasonal vegetables and edible flowers provide the ingredients for the experience of smell, taste, sight, touch and sound.
