Ryder Cup, the premier international golfing event

The Ryder Cup is a six-day event, including three practice days and three competition days, during which the best 12 golfers from Europe and the best 12 from America compete for the prestigious trophy. First held in the United States in 1927, it was named after British businessman Samuel Ryder, who donated the trophy. The cup and the honour of winning are the only prizes offered by the tournament.

The Ryder Cup pits the United States against Europe and is the only sporting event in which the Old Continent competes as a team. It is played every two years alternately in a European or American city. On December 14, 2015, Italy was awarded the right to host the Ryder Cup. The competition will be held in Rome from 29th September to 1st October, with the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club as the official venue. It will be the third time the most prestigious golf competition is played outside Great Britain (after the edition hosted by Spain in 1997, and France in 2018). The Covid-19 pandemic caused the event, originally scheduled for 2022, to be postponed by one year.

With three stunning days of play preceded by another three days of practice, it is not only the most prestigious golf championship, but also the third most important and watched sporting event in the world after the Olympics and the World Cup. The Capitolino Golf Club is preparing to welcome the anticipated 50,000 spectators with its 150 hectares of countryside, just 17 km from the heart of Rome, and its 27 beautiful holes around the Marco Simone Castle, whose oldest buildings date back to the year 1000.

Following the redevelopment and improvement works, the course will be transformed into a sporting destination capable of attracting more and more players and fans of this ever-expanding sport, leaving a valuable legacy for the upcoming generation of golfers.

The worldwide popularity of golf and the participation of each continent’s top golfers makes the Ryder Cup a truly special occasion.

The last edition of the Ryder Cup played in France in 2018, with over 270,000 spectators at Le Golf National, was viewed in over 600 million homes with more than 160 countries tuned in on live television. The Ryder Cup is thus confirmed as the best tool for promoting golf, the most popular individual sport in the world boasting 65 million players.

For Italian golf, to succeed in organising the Ryder Cup would be an achievement of historic proportions, decreeing its entrance through the main gate into the world elite of this sport.

If one considers the calibre of the opponents overcome in the race to host the Ryder Cup, including countries with strong golfing traditions like Germany, Spain and Austria, as well as Denmark and Turkey, who ultimately decided to withdraw their bids, the victory assumes an even higher value.

Ryder Cup where to stay
